Roland line showing all connections back to 1700's that I am sure of: (click on the chart in a computer to view full screen and large enough to read. I will post it lower on the page in original size too.
Your research is very detailed and awesome. I am a Roland and I am trying to compose our history so we can have a family reunion soon. I live in Missouri and do not have access to all of your resources. Can I have your permission to use your data? The internet goes only so far. My father was George Chauncey Roland. His father was George Raymond Roland and my grandmother was Ethyl Molly McMahan. Her father used to be the preacher at several churches in the area. His name is William Filmore McMahan. The majority of our family are still in Marion North Carolina. I am the main one interested. Thank You..If I can help you let me know. Brenda Kay Roland Varga.
Brenda Kay, you and I are definitely related distant cousins through Henry Halley Roland's son John and his wife, Ellendor (Nelly) Riddle. Henry Halley had two sons name John, one adopted grandchild, and one direct blood line son. So It's important to ck their ages carefully when entering information on them. But, I have sons and daughters down to your grandfather, and census records for some. You may reference my material, but would appreciate that you give it proper reference. The records are mostly found in Yancey County NC, but include some Bumcombe Co, early records as well. Charles Henry "Halley" Roland (nickname because he often said Hallelujah) was the son of Charles Henry Roland, who went by Charles, and said his birthplace was in Hillsboro, NC. Most researchers believe his father was George Roland(Rolin)of Haw Creek NC. which is just west of what became Hillsboro. Charles fought in the Revolutionary War, and is on tax records when the County names were changing, in another county. He was awarded grant lands and is one of the early settlers of what became Yancey. Many of the Rolands spread into Marion County, and I have gone to Mt Pleasant Baptist Church and other local cemeteries there, to take pictures of graves. My own ancestor, William Bailous Roland is buried over there, at another church, with his wife, Nancy Ellender Silver, who is a descendant of John Roland through a Silver connection. Sorry I am so late in seeing this comment, but it seems that Blogger only just went back to the format that I opened this blog under, and suddenly I have all these messages. I haven't seen them before now. I hope in the last 2 years you have found a great deal of information. The cemetery records were of great help to me. I also visited a funeral home there, and they helped me go through old burial indexes to find addresses to the cemeteries where Rolands were Buried. I hope your research is going well. With great respect, Cynthia
Hi Cynthia, I ran into your blog a while back and it has given me some new leads in my family research. Your research and blog is awesome. In your blog you give details of the Roland/Rowland/Rolen family. My family spells it Rolen. Also in your blog you speak of James and William Rolen. I also am searching for who James Rolen's parents, grandparents, great grandparents, etc. were, where they lived at, and their genealogy information. My family descends from Joab Rolen in Sevier County,TN. I do have sourced info all the way to him. In family records, we have stories of Joab's father (James Rolen) drowning in a creek while heading back to Buncombe,NC. The McMahan family took Joab Rolen and raised him. Joab Rolen became a large land owner in Sevier County,TN. In the link below..it shows William Rolen as James father, but, I can't find any more info, sourced or unsourced. Here is my families info and tree. It's very user friendly and easy to move around in. Here is Joab Rolen's page.https://www.smokykin.com/tng/getperson.php?personID=I25810&tree=Smokykin........There is written history of Joab Rolen and his father(James) drowning at the bottom of Archibald Rolen's page https://www.smokykin.com/tng/getperson.php?personID=I38966&tree=Smokykin
I just came across your blog entry “They Came to the Mountains”, specifically on the Roland family.
My great-grandmother, named Sally Roller (born around 1876), was said to have originated in Bristol, Tennessee. She ended up in New Orleans, and when I tried to learn about her roots, I’ve ended up with more questions than answers. DNA testing leads us to two family lines, presumably the paternal and maternal. One is the Allens from Yancey, North Carolina, and the other is Smith/Johnsons from Blount, Tennessee, with some moving on to Blount, Alabama. I don’t see any clear intersection of these two groups. The only possible connection I’ve found leads me to explore the Rolands (maybe morphing into Roller to some?).
From the Johnson family, a Phoebe Johnson (1839-1911) married who I believe to be the Raburn Roland you referenced in your blog, in Blount, Tennessee. (I’d read somewhere that he deserted from the Confederate army.) Also, a William Bollen (Rollen?) appears in the 1860 federal census in the Blount, Tennessee household of Phoebe’s grandparents, James and. Nancy Johnson, where Phoebe, her sister, Martha, and their mother, Huldah (Hally?) Johnson lived. It appears Hally was married to William as they shared a last name in the census. Martha Johnson married William Louis Williams, and a few legal documents I found inexplicably show Martha’s maiden name as Roller, rather than Johnson. This is the only place in my research, I’ve seen any possible reference to my great-grandmother’s believed name.
From the Allen family, I noted that Rachel Ann Roland, daughter of Halle Roland from Yancey, North Carolina, married two Allen brothers — William and Adoniram David Allen III. I also noted that Jane Virginia “Jennie” Allen and her husband, Stephen A. Anglin in Clay, Kentucky had a William Roland living with their family in the 1850 federal census. In that census, Jennie’s home was flanked by the homes of Jennie’s father, John Breckinridge Allen, and brother, John Breckinridge “Jacky” Allen, Jr.
I wonder if the two Williams might be the same person. Would you have any information on this or more information on Raburn? Any additional information you could provide would be much appreciated. Your blog post was already very informative and helpful. Thanks so much for compiling and sharing it! I look forward to hearing back from you.
